Pat Noxolo To Give The Society And Space Lecture At The 2017 Rgs-Ibg Meeting In London

We are delighted to announce that Pat Noxolo, Lecturer in Human Geography at the University of Birmingham, will give the Society and Space lecture at the 2017 RGS-IBG meeting London. The talk, titled “Flat Out! Decolonising (dance in) Birmingham at a time of austerity”, is scheduled for Wednesday August 30th from 11:10am - 12:50pm.

Noxolo will reflect on a collaboration with Birmingham Royal Ballet and the (now defunct) Drum Intercultural Arts Centre, in which she worked with members of the community in the Lozells and Newtown areas of the city, to participate in dance and contribute to the devising of a ballet performance. Noxolo has often perceived her work on African-Caribbean dance to be much more directly relevant to her work on postcolonial and decolonial theory, but this talk interrogates this assumption, and works towards uncovering some complex links between community arts in Birmingham at a time of austerity, postcolonial/decolonial theory, and ballet.
